How Counselling Works
Counsellors don't usually give advice. You and I work together to explore and understand the problems you're experiencing, so that you're better able to move on, get more out of life or to make decisions for yourself.
Counselling sessions are held for 50 minutes (1 hour for couples), usually once a week for a number of weeks. These sessions are a springboard, generating new ideas, different angles and other ways of looking at or dealing with your difficulties. You will probably think about these ideas during the week, which will help you to clarify your thoughts. It will also cast further light on the problem, or raise new possibilities for the future.
Counselling can give you support and the help you need to see things more clearly. It can also give you the motivation and tools you need to move forward.
Choosing a Counsellor
It's very important that you choose a properly qualified counsellor who's right for you. The British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the lead professional body for the counselling profession, recommends that, "for preference you should choose a registered practitioner".
You can read more about choosing a counsellor at the BACP website. The advice in Making Your Choice should be particularly useful.
